iOS – Get Luminance instructions
- Open Get Luminance
- Touch ‘Gallery’
- Select photo
- Select and Measure LRV area 1
- Touch photo to get ‘selector box’
- Selector box can be moved around
- Adjust photo size if needed: 2-finger pinch or 2-finger spread to reduce or enlarge selected area of photo and 1-finger to move image (note selector box disappears)
- Touch resized photo to get selector box back
- Touch ‘crop’ symbol next to ‘Get LRV 1’
- Touch ‘Get LRV 1’ (LRV for area 1 appears in right hand box)
- Select and Measure LRV area 2
- As area 1 except ‘Get LRV 2’
- Touch ‘Get LRV 2’
- Calculation of visual contrast (luminance contrast)
- Select ‘Calculation method’ from menu
- Touch ‘Calculate’ Visual contrast of area 1 and 2 shown (this is a value of 0-100 and has no units)
- Touch ‘Clear’ to clear values (not photo)
- For measurements from a new photo, go to Gallery
Android – Get Luminance instructions
- Open Get Luminance
- Touch ‘Start’
- Touch ‘Gallery’
- Select photo
- Select and Measure LRV area 1
- Touch ‘crop’ symbol next to ‘Get LRV 1’ (opens screen 2)
- Selector tool appears in centre
- Move selector to area to be measured (it will adjust photo)
- Selector tool can be moved or resized
- Touch ‘Crop’ (top right)
- Selection appears in screen 1
- Touch ‘Get LRV 1’ (LRV for area 1 appears in right hand box)
- Select and Measure LRV area 2
- As area 1 except Touch ‘crop’ symbol next to ‘Get LRV 2’ (opens screen 2) and
- Touch ‘Get LRV 2’ (LRV for area 2 appears in right hand box)

General use
For vertical building features:
Eg door and wall contrasts; glazing decals/manifestation;
- Hold camera at 90o to the horizontal.
- Take photo.
- Assess visual contrast.
For glazing strips – take photo both inside and outside to assess safety and amenity of glazing strip. There can be marked differences between inside and outside.
OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA
For horizontal features:
Eg Floor and wall contrast; tactile surface indicators
- Hold phone within typical viewing angle 40o-50o.
- Take photo.
- Assess visual contrast.
For angled features:
Eg stair handrails, stair nosings, ramps
- Hold phone within typical viewing angle for use of stairs, (typically 30-50o) or ramps (typically 0-30o).
- Take photo.
- Assess visual contrast.
