Why?

The consequence of inadequate luminance contrast is increased public liability (slips, trips, falls) and disability discrimination risks because:

  • Luminance contrast in new built assets is often ‘guessed’ on site with poor outcomes.  
  • Manufacturer light reflectance values (LRVs) provide a starting point, but when installed, finishes ‘look’ different and do not comply, because prevailing light conditions are different to controlled laboratory conditions.
  • In existing facilities, maintenance is required.  Normal wear-and-tear degrades finishes, reducing luminance contrast.
